National Physical Fitness and Sports

MONTH

Regular physical activity is good for everyone’s health, and people of all ages and body types can be physically active. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great time to recap the benefits of getting active. Here are just a few:

  • Children and adolescents – Physical activity can improve muscular fitness, bone health, and heart health.
  • Adults – Physical activity can lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.
  • Older adults – Physical activity can lower the risk of falls and improve cognitive functioning (like learning and judgment skills).

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends that children and adolescents (ages 6-17) should get 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily. HHS suggests that adults should get at least 2.5 hours each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity.

If you are an adult who hasn’t been active before or not in quite some time, it is always wise to speak with your doctor first. Then, start at a comfortable level. As time goes on, add a little more activity each time and try getting active more often. Use these resources to learn more about physical activity for:
