Help is here when you need it

On occasion, everyone experiences feeling worried, anxious, sad or stressed out; feelings that are all a part of everyday life, and not necessarily a mental illness. A mental health disorder is any disease or condition that affects your mood, thinking and behavior in a way that interferes with your ability to function in daily life.

So, how would you know the difference? Here are some indicators of a mental illness:

  • Long-lasting sadness
  • Excessive fear, worrying or anxiety
  • Social withdrawal or sustained withdrawn behavior
  • Unexplained physical problems or persistent physical ailments and complaints (such as headache)
  • Confused thinking
  • Obsessive preoccupation with food and fear of becoming obese with no relationship to actual body weight
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Inability to cope with demands of daily life or a significant decline in work/school performance
  • Misuse of alcohol or drugs
  • Suicidal thoughts, the urge to hurt others or engage in self-mutilation, self-destructive or dangerous behavior
